The Acolyte is getting clearer. As Disney+ rapidly expands the Star Wars universe, it’s easy to forget what films and series are coming out. Of course, big projects like Obi-Wan Kenobi and The Mandalorian are easy to remember. However, projects like Andor or The Acolyte are forgotten about until they get brought up in an interview, or talked about elsewhere. So, let’s talk about it.
The Acolyte follows the emergence of Dark Side powers in the galaxy prior to the events of The Phantom Menace. The show is created and written by Leslye Headland, who created Netflix’s Russian Doll. Also, the series is rumored to release in Summer 2023. Unfortunately, there are no other concrete details about the show. However, we have have learned a few more details today.
The Acolyte Is Set 100 Years Before The Phantom Menace
During an interview with Vanity Fair, showrunner Leslye Headland provided some new details on The Acolyte. Headland stated the show is set 100 years before The Phantom Menace. She went on to add:
A lot of those characters haven’t even been born yet. We’re taking a look at the political and personal and spiritual things that came up in a time period that we don’t know much about. My question when watching The Phantom Menace was always like, “Well, how did things get to this point?” How did we get to a point where a Sith lord can infiltrate the Senate and none of the Jedi pick up on it? Like, what went wrong? What are the scenarios that led us to this moment?”Leslye Headland on The Acolyte
The Phantom Menace Returns
We have known for a while the show happens before The Phantom Menace. However, it is good to know how close it takes place to the movie. While this sound close to the High Republic Era that is being explored in comics and books, this is probably towards the end of that era. Seeing the decline of the High Republic into the Republic seen in the prequels will be fascinating. Especially, since the show is exploring the dark side of the force and the Sith. Both of those elements are fairly unexplored in live-action Star Wars.
Additionally, it will be interesting to see what pre-existing characters appear in this show. Yoda would be alive around this time. And it’s possible Darth Plagueis could be as well. Perhaps, we will see the tale of Darth Plagueis the wise playout on our screens.
