WARNING: This article does contain spoilers for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

Doctor Strange in The Multiverse of Madness is huge (read our spoiler and non-spoiler reviews). The movie expands the MCU in a lot of ways. It setups a lot in the next phase of the MCU and adds a bunch of new characters: America Chavez and the Illuminati of Earth 838. The movie really has everything one could want of an MCU movie.

However, Doctor Strange 2 has a whole bunch of missed connections. The movie certainly has all sorts of multiversal madness, but during development, it had way more. Firstly, a Deadpool cameo was considered. Then even a Tom Cruise cameo was talked about. And now we know about another potential cameo. One that was much closer to actually happening.

Daniel Craig Was Almost In Doctor Strange 2

Daniel Craig

In a tweet, Deadline senior film reporter Justin Kroll confirmed that Daniel Craig was going to be in the film. Specifically, he was supposed to be playing Reed Richards on the Illuminati. Ultimately, Craig left the part due to COVID concerns. You can see the full tweet below:

The story does not end there though. Twitter user @heavyspoilers said that Craig was actually supposed to be Balder the Brave on the Illuminati. For those who don’t know, Balder the Brave is the half-brother of Thor in Marvel Comics. For a while, Balder was rumored to be part of the Illuminati in the movie. You can see the full tweet below:

While it may not exactly be clear who Craig would have been, it is clear he was close to being in the film. Kroll certainly has way more credibility than @heavyspoilers, but it is very hard to imagine Craig as Reed Richards. Balder is a role much better suited for Craig. That said, not having Craig in the film is a missed opportunity regardless of the role. However, it does leave the door open for him to play a more significant role in the future. Which would be great since Craig is a wonderful actor.

Additionally, the Illuminati in the movie already had plenty of fan service going on. So, it is not like they needed another big-name actor when the movie already has enough going on.
