Bad news for Fantastic Four.

The MCU has been firing on all cylinders lately. It has a bunch of new upcoming films and shows that are all very exciting. Some films feature returning characters like The Marvels and Black Panther 2 but the more exciting properties are the ones that have new characters not seen before in the MCU such as Blade. But the most exciting upcoming film is Fantastic Four.

Details around Fantastic Four are pretty much nonexistent. There is no information on who the cast will be or when the movie starts production. Fox previously had two Fantastic Four in the early 2000s so it’s safe to assume the MCU version would be different from those. Really the only concrete detail known was that Jon Watts, who directed the MCU Spider-Man movies, was going to direct the movie. But even that has changed it seems.

Jon Watts Exits Fantastic Four

Deadline has reported that Jon Watts is no longer the director for Fantastic Four. Both Marvel Studios and Jon Watts have confirmed that Watts is leaving as director of the Fantastic Four movie. The split is amicable. Watts is leaving to get a break from superhero films after directing the last Spider-Man Trilogy. In a statement, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige had this to say:

Collaborating with Jon on the Spider-Man films has been a true pleasure. We were looking forward to continuing our work with him to bring the Fantastic Four into the MCU but understand and are supportive of his reasons for stepping away. We are optimistic that we will have the opportunity to work together again at some point down the road.

Jon Watts added:

Making three Spider-Man films was an incredible and life-changing experience for me. I’m eternally grateful to have been a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe for seven years. I’m hopeful we’ll work together again and I can’t wait to see the amazing vision for Fantastic Four brought to life.

Jon Watts on leaving Fantastic Four

The news while unexpected is not entirely shocking. Working on three major blockbuster films essentially back to back is bound to tire anyone out. Watts did a great job with the Spider-Man films and he certainly would have done a great job with Fantastic Four. The good news is that this opens the door for some fresh talent to enter the MCU. Maybe an upcoming director can get their first major film or like the situation with Sam Raimi and Doctor Strange 2; an established director can come in and provide their unique spin on the MCU formula.
