El Muerto…..well, it’s a movie.

El Muerto, the next entry in the SUMC is here. Sony has slowly but surely been building out their Marvel Universe. Sony owns the film rights to Spider-Man and all his associated characters. Their first attempt at a Spider-Man cinematic universe failed when The Amazing Spider-Man 2 was critically shunned. However, in 2018 they started over.

First with Venom, then its sequel, Venom: Let There Be Carnage, Sony has slowly been rebuilding their Spider-Man universe. They recently started filming Kraven The Hunter and Madame Web is going to start production soon. So far, all films that have released (Venom, Carnage, Morbius) have had poor critical reception. However, that hasn’t stopped Sony. Now, we know what the next step in their cinematic universe will be.

El Muerto Film Starring Bad Bunny In Active Development

At their 2022 CinemaCon panel, Sony Pictures announced that an El Muerto movie starring Bad Bunny is in active development. The film is slated to release on January 12, 2024. No other details are known at this time. In the comics, El Muerto wrestled against Spider-Man and nearly unmasked him. Later, Spider-Man assisted him in fighting off El Dorado. See the logo below:

This is one of Sony’s more baffling decisions with the Spider-Man IP. El Muerto is a character who has two appearances in the comics. Many hardcore fans probably have not even heard of the character until today. So unlike Venom, Morbius, or even Kraven, there is practically no source material to base the film on. For all intents and purposes, the film would pretty much be an original story.

Who knows, maybe the film could be huge. Bad Bunny is a massively popular artist. Maybe his fans will support his movies. According to reports, his character is well-liked in test screenings of Bullet Train. It’s possible the film will be a smash hit. However, Sony has an abysmal track record with Spider-Man films and spinoffs, so the odds are stacked against El Muerto.
