When the MCU introduced us to the Guardians of the Galaxy, it opened Marvel fans to the cosmic element of Marvel on the big screen. An element that has always been a huge part of the Marvel Comics mythos. One highly anticipated character since the team was introduced has been Adam Warlock. Warlock has played an important role in many off-world adventures on the pages. Now, with his introduction set for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, fans are getting excited.
It was announced last year that Maze Runner & Midsommar star Will Poulter was cast to play Adam Warlock, a role that he expressed a heavy excitement for having been cast in. Very little has been said or seen in updates about Poulter’s Adam Warlock on set. Last year while promoting his show Dopesick, Poulter offered only a tiny bit of information, in which he alluded to working out to get bigger for the role.
Will Poulter Talks Workout For Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3
Will Poulter recently sat down with The Independent to discuss how he prepares for roles and upcoming projects. During the interview he offered insights into his progress and workout routine to play Adam Warlock. Poulter discussed that it was important to him that his mental and physical health remain “number one”, and the “aesthetic goals have to be secondary”. He also said that he “wouldn’t recommend anyone” do what he did to get ready for the job. Read the quote:
It’s difficult talking about it because with Marvel it’s all secret squirrel, but the most important thing is that your mental and physical health has to be number one, and the aesthetic goals have to be secondary, otherwise you end up promoting something that is unhealthy and unrealistic if you don’t have the financial backing of a studio paying for your meals and training. I’m in a very privileged position in that respect, and I wouldn’t recommend anyone do what I did to get ready for that job. Will Poulter on his workout regimen
The star of We’re The Millers is noticeably different in size in recent projects as compared to the past. By his breakdown of his MCU routine, it seems it was a very different experience for him:
It’s been a lot of gym work and a very, very specific diet. It means not particularly civilized at times. Quantities of food you wouldn’t necessarily want to ingest. And other times, not enough food. I’ve gone through a series of different diets over the last few months. Will Poulter on his workout regimen
Poulter said that he is in a “maintenance phase” right now and it is “quite nice”. Where he’s just maintaining his weight for the role rather than gaining or losing pounds:
Now I’m in a maintenance phase, which is quite nice. I’m not eating copious amounts of food in bulk, and I’m not cutting. I’m just maintaining my weight. I’ve gone through periods of looking at food and feeling like I can’t face it, and then you blink and the next minute you’re ready to eat furniture because you’re so hungry. Will Poulter on his workout regimen
The MCU has never been a stranger to magnificent physical changes that we have seen in their actors. The most famous example probably being from Chris Pratt, who has mentioned losing 60 lbs. to transform himself into the look of Starlord. Other MCU stars such as Simu Liu for Shang Chi & Brie Larson for Captain Marvel. It was good to see that Poulter spoke freely that he wouldn’t recommend the workout and that he didn’t want to promote something that could be unhealthy and unrealistic. It will definitely be exciting to see his transformation in full Adam Warlock form in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
