Analysis: Will The Delta Variant Force Studios To Shift Film Slates Yet Again?

With a lot of the world under lockdown for 2020, with vaccines available in 2021, there was hope of defeating the virus. Now, it looks like we may be shutting down again. Cinema Reviewed’s Adam Wade analyzed the situation, and here’s what he found (Actual analysis below “Do More Films Have The Potential To Be Delayed?”).

Why Is Hollywood Delaying Films Again?

In recent months, the new Delta Variant has starting spreading, with the number of cases and deaths rising. It seems studios have noticed this. They have delayed films, with ‘Clifford: The Big Red Dog’ being the first of what’s likely to be many.

What Has Been Delayed So Far?

As mentioned earlier, Paramount Pictures’ ‘Clifford The Big Red Dog’ has been delayed indefinitely due to uncertainty of how the new Delta Variant might affect the box office. David Lowery’s “The Green Knight” has been delayed in the UK due to the same reason, while a episode of Marvel Studios’ “What If…?” being pushed to season 2 since it hadn’t finished on time.

Do More Films Have The Potential To Be Delayed?

It’s seems there are a lot of questions on what Hollywood could delay next. There have been concerns around ‘Venom: Let There Be Carnage’ after Sony started advertising the film as “This Fall” rather than the September 24th date.

There are also concerns over the highly anticipated ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’. With 4 months until the film, we still have no trailer or footage, besides 3 stills released in February.

With the pandemic being an ever changing situation, all studios can do is watch and wait. All we can do is wonder if the box office will ever be the same.

My Thoughts On The Topic

The coronavirus is a ever changing situation. Even with vaccines being created, developed, and rolled out, expect films to be delayed. Studios want to make as much money as possible, especially from blockbuster films they know can do well in a good market.

To conclude, I do believe that films like ‘Dune’, ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ and ‘Venom: Let There Be Carnage’ could be delayed if COVID statistics don’t get better. Only time will tell.
